Good. I use them sometimes because I have to, but their corporate practices and employee treatment are just so dirty. I just wish there were a ride-share app that didn’t require you to make a moral compromise every time you book a ride. And no, Lyft isn’t better, they’re just less transparently worse.

my only problem is that uber/lyft are the entire public transit infrastructure in my area. Since LA is a car ruled kingdom, being able to request an uber cheaply and quickly is the way to get around when not driving. Thankfully I dont drink alcohol so I can generally just drive everywhere myself. But my fears of uber/lyft collapsing are always real and how terrible getting to the airport would become or just going anywhere without driving myself. Like sure there are traditional taxis I could call up and pay 3x the price for a somehow even worse service (if it actually shows up within an hour or at all ) . But that feels like the stone ages now!

My brother keep talking about driving for them. I refuses to believe how bad they really are.

Oh believe me, I know well the travails of LA transportation. It’s not that I’m against ride-sharing per se, just against shitty business practice. How hard can it be to allow your d rivers to actually have meaningful compensation and to publish your fee structure? It’s pretty basic good-business. Yes, people want cheap fares, but under-charging 80% of the time so that you can super-overcharge during 20% of “peak” hours is not really adequately compensatory.

Its the same deal as restaurant tipping generally. The business cries and wines that if they got rid of all of the artificially low prices in favor of paying their people more, then nobody would shop there/use their product anymore. That is a crock of bullshit, I would be using uber/lyft regardless of what it costs. Its a useful product that I dont mind paying 5-10% more in order to treat the employees like human beings. And I would much rather menu items include the 15-20% that Im required to pay servers. Its why I hate going out to eat in the US. Tax and tip are easily 30% of the damn bill and its always included overseas whereas the bill is definitely not an entire 30% higher in price! So that money is just profit to businesses here at the expense of literally everyone else .

The Uber drivers here are the worst. Saw one hit a lady last year and almost hit another lady the other day. I don’t even live here and have been able to navigate the entirety of the city  fine just using the underground and buses.

And that’s exactly why, since I live in a city with a significant number of taxis, I use them. I pay a bit more, and they actually know where they’re going.

A few years ago when Uber was “better”, I looked at it and quickly concluded that the level of compensation on a per km basis didn’t cover for all the car costs (including depreciation) adequately given the types of vehicles they were willing to accept.

Basically they paid on a level that be worthy of a sub-$5000 beater, but expected something that would cost at least 4 times that.

The people who drive for Uber are those who haven’t added up ALL their car costs... or don’t understand concepts like depreciation.

I suspect it would be financially smarter to not own a car and work at a fast food joint close to home (within walking/bicycle riding distance) for minimum wage.
